Energy Consumption Has Dropped, But Cuts Have Increased

Every time there is a power cut, are you told that the city’s demand is too high to handle? That cheap air-conditioners are allowing everyone to indulge and that the government is feeling the heat, buying expensive power from other states? This is true, but only half the truth.

energy consumption in January-July 2003 was 7352.926 million units (MU), which grew by 6.54% to 7833.995 MU in 2004. It dropped to 724.179 MU this year.
In 2000-01, the peak demand was 2670 MW and it increased by 7.8% to 2879 MW the next year.
there was only a 3.89% increase between the peak demand in 2004 (3490 MW) and that in 2005 (3626 MW).

Loadshedding was a bare 46.718 MU down by 54.95% from 2003, this year the loadshedding has shot up to 56.945 MU, an increase of 21.89%.
