Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez left Wednesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals with a bloody nose following a collision with shortstop Edgar Renteria.
Ramirez, who belted a three-run homer in the first inning, caught Ruben Gotay’s short fly ball to left field to end the second inning. However, Ramirez and Renteria collided and both were down on the field at Fenway Park for a few minutes. Renteria was running out to left field, while Ramirez came charging in to make the catch. Renteria extended the glove from his left hand and his right hand hit Ramirez, causing blood to ooze out of the leftfielder’s nose. Ramirez was attended by medical personnel on the field, but walked off under his own power with a tissue in his right nostril. He was replaced in left field by Gabe Kapler to start the third inning. Ramirez was diagnosed with a contusion to the right side of his chest and face and is considered day-to-day. The home run over the Green Monster in the first inning off Kyle Snyder gave Ramirez an American League-leading 30 homers and a major-league best 100 RBI this season. It’s the eight straight 30-homer, 100-RBI season for Ramirez. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only six other players in baseball history have registered at least eight consecutive 30-100 seasons: Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa, Babe Ruth and Albert Belle. It’s the 10th time in the last 11 years Manny has at least 30 homers and 100 RBI and his fifth in as many years in Boston. The only other Red Sox with five seasons of 30 homers are Ted Williams (8) and Jimmie Foxx (5). Ramirez, who wasn’t traded over the weekend after persistent rumors had him linked to a three-team deal with the Mets and Devil Rays, has eight RBI in his last three games.
