Network worms are shutting down computers running Microsoft’s Windows 2000 operating system, security experts warned Tuesday.

Computers across the United States are being hit, including those at cable news station CNN, television network ABC and The New York Times. Tokyo-based antivirus company Trend Micro blames the havoc on various worms, including the Zotob worm that hit the Internet over the weekend and new variants of the Rbot worm.

All of the worms exploit a security hole in the plug-and-play feature in the Windows 2000 operating system. Microsoft offered a fix for the bug as part of its monthly patching cycle last week. The software maker deemed the issue “critical,” its most serious rating.

Oil price bites into Wal-Mart profits

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, warned yesterday that the rising price of oil was beginning to take its toll on consumers.
The firm, which attracts 100 million shoppers to its American stores each week, posted its smallest profit gain in four years during the second quarter. It also cautioned that results in the current third quarter would be below Wall Street expectations.

Its shares fell by 3.3% in early trading, dampening the wider markets.

17 Killed in Afghanistan Crash of Spanish Military Copter

Afghanistan, Aug. 16 -
A Spanish military helicopter crashed in the desert in western Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing all 17 on board, in what military officials said appeared to be an accident. A second helicopter made a forced landing in the same area, injuring 5 of the 17 Spanish soldiers on board, the NATO-led International Security and Assistance Force said in a statement.

“ISAF believes that this is the result of an accident, but will not prejudge the results of the investigation,” said Maj. Andrew Elmes, a spokesman for the force in Kabul.

US Blood Supply Safe From West Nile Virus

GAITHERSBURG, Md., Aug. 3-Rapid response and cooperation between blood-collection agencies and public health authorities appear to have been effective at keeping the U.S. blood supply safe from West Nile virus.

Using nucleic acid amplification (NAA) tests, the American Red Cross was able to prospectively identify 519 donors who tested positive for West Nile virus, reported researchers from the Red Cross here in the Aug. 3 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. The 519 donors accounted for 1,023 potentially infectious blood products.

What is the difference between require() and include()?—The two constructs require() and include() are identical in every way except how they handle failure. include() produces a Warning while require() results in a Fatal Error. In other words, use require() if you want a missing file to halt processing of the page. include() does not behave this way, the script will continue regardless. Be sure to have an appropriate include_path setting as well. Be warned that parse error in included file doesn't cause processing halting in PHP versions prior to PHP 4.3.5. Since this version, it does.
